We use Jambo CBD Pet Drops to help our dog manage her symptoms of Glaucoma. Glaucoma is a condition that causes a build-up of fluid and pressure in the eye. If the fluid causes too much pressure there can be damage to the retina and optic nerves, which leads to blindness. Some dog breeds are more susceptible to developing this disease but no dog is immune so if you are concerned see a doctor immediately. Signs and Symptoms
Glaucoma causes pain that’s more severe in dogs than in humans but it can be hard for us to understand that they are in pain until it is extremely severe. Here are some signs to look out for:
- Rubbing up against the floor or another object with the paw
- Redness of the eye
- Cloudy cornea
- Squinting
- Tearing
- Avoidance of light
- Fluttering eyelid
- Pupils appear different in size
- Vessels in the white of the eye
- Vision problems: bumping into objects, difficulty finding things, walking cautiously
Primary or Secondary
There are two types of Glaucoma, primary and secondary.
Primary Glaucoma has an abnormal fluid flow rate into or out of the eye which increases pressure. This is usually inherited because of a genetic predisposition within breeds. It can happen at any time, but usually mid-life (3-7 years old) symptoms present themselves.
Secondary Glaucoma is the result of another eye condition. This is more common in dogs and can happen after bleeding, swelling, and inflammation due to another sickness or injury such as; tumors, infections, cataracts, eye cancer, inflammation, chronic retinal detachment.
How My Dog Got Glaucoma
My dog was rescued from a home where she was beat. While she had no visible deformities from the owner she was very anxiety ridden and squirmish to sudden movements and loud noises. After about a year my roommate got a Pitbull that loved rough housing, wrestling, and nipping at each other.
We noticed a slight cloudiness in her eye but she wasn’t showing any signs of pain so we figured maybe she had a little infection from messing around with the other dog. It did not clear up as we had hoped and admittedly we waited longer than we should have to take her to see a doctor.
At the doctor she passed the tear production test but the pressure in her eye was significant and we were instructed to see an eye specialist. She has scar tissue from previous injuries but it wasn’t a direct result of those injuries. She is a mini black lab mix and it was more than likely genetic (primary glaucoma) We were given drops and ointments to help with the cloudiness and to reduce the pressure to prevent further damage.
Caring for a Dog with Glaucoma
Other than giving her her prescribed medicine we focus on other ways we can help the condition from worsening. We walk her on a harness leash instead of a leash at the collar because pulling at her neck can cause excess bouts of pressure. I mentioned before that she struggles with stress and anxiety so we do our best to keep her calm. We had already been giving her CBD drops in her kibble to help her mood, eating habits, and anxiety so it was an easy decision to continue use for glaucoma purposes as well.
We give her CBD oil because of the noticeable pain relief it provides without using strong pain medications long-term. It also has anti-inflammatory properties to help reduce inflammation that causes pressure and pain. Anti-inflammatory medicine is almost always part of the treatment plan so CBD oil can be a natural alternative or additional treatment.
